In League of Legends, individual champion strength matters, but how your five champions work together is what wins games. A team with five S-tier champions that do not synergize will lose to a team with a coherent strategy and complementary picks. This guide explains the major team composition archetypes, what makes a balanced team, and how to think about draft from a macro perspective.
Why Team Composition Matters
Team composition determines your win condition: the specific way your team is designed to close out games. Without a clear win condition, teams flounder in the mid game, taking bad fights and losing to teams with a plan. Here is what a good composition provides:
- A clear win condition that everyone understands and plays toward
- Balanced damage types so the enemy cannot stack one type of resistance
- Adequate crowd control to initiate fights, peel for carries, or pick off enemies
- Frontline and backline balance so your carries have space to deal damage
- Power spike alignment so your champions peak at the same time in the game
The Five Major Team Comp Archetypes
1. Teamfight Composition
The most straightforward composition. Teamfight comps want to group as five and force 5v5 fights around objectives. They rely on strong AoE abilities, crowd control, and frontline tanks to win battles.
Key characteristics:
- Strong AoE damage from mid lane and ADC
- Reliable engage from top lane or support (Malphite, Amumu, Leona)
- Peel capabilities to protect the carry line
- Good objective control through team fight threat
Example comp: Malphite top, Amumu jungle, Orianna mid, Miss Fortune ADC, Leona support. This composition can wipe an entire team with a well-coordinated Malphite/Amumu ult into Orianna ult into MF ult. Even one or two of these ultimates combining is usually enough to win a fight.
Win condition: Group at objectives (Dragon, Baron) and force teamfights. Use your superior AoE and CC to win the 5v5.
2. Pick Composition
Pick comps are designed to catch individual enemies out of position and kill them before a team fight can start. Once you get a pick, you convert the numbers advantage into an objective.
Key characteristics:
- Long-range or instant crowd control for catching enemies (hooks, bindings, stuns)
- Burst damage to kill the caught target quickly
- Strong vision control to find isolated enemies
- Champions that excel in skirmishes over full teamfights
Example comp: Camille top, Elise jungle, Ahri mid, Jhin ADC, Thresh support. Every champion in this comp has the ability to lock down a single target. Thresh hook into Jhin W, Camille ult, Ahri charm, and Elise cocoon all create pick opportunities.
Win condition: Control vision around the map, find isolated enemies, kill them, then take objectives with the numbers advantage. Avoid full 5v5 teamfights if possible.
3. Poke Composition
Poke comps win by whittling down the enemy team's health from long range before any fight actually starts. Once the enemy team is low enough, you either force an engage on favorable terms or take objectives uncontested.
Key characteristics:
- Long-range abilities that deal meaningful damage (Jayce, Xerath, Varus)
- Disengage tools to prevent the enemy from forcing fights while poked down
- Strong siege potential to pressure towers
- Waveclear to stall the game if needed
Example comp: Jayce top, Nidalee jungle, Xerath mid, Varus ADC, Janna support. This team can poke the enemy from extreme range while Janna's tornado and ultimate prevent any hard engage from reaching the backline.
Win condition: Group at towers or objectives and poke the enemy team from range. Force them to either fight at low health or give up the objective. Avoid getting caught in close-range fights.
4. Split Push Composition
Split push comps use one or two strong duelists to pressure side lanes while the rest of the team holds objectives elsewhere. The idea is to create a lose-lose situation for the enemy: send someone to stop the split pusher and lose the 4v3, or ignore the split pusher and lose towers and inhibitors.
Key characteristics:
- A strong 1v1 duelist who can push quickly (Fiora, Tryndamere, Jax)
- A team that can hold 4v4 or 4v5 without dying
- Good waveclear on the 4-person group to stall fights
- Teleport or global abilities to rejoin the team if needed
Example comp: Fiora top, Gragas jungle, Anivia mid, Ezreal ADC, Janna support. Fiora split pushes a side lane while Anivia, Ezreal, Janna, and Gragas safely waveclear and disengage any fight the enemy tries to force 4v5.
Win condition: Send the split pusher to a side lane and have the group of four waveclear mid or at an objective. Force the enemy to either deal with the split pusher or contest the objective, but never let them do both.
5. Protect the Carry Composition
Also known as "Juggermaw" or "funnel" style, this composition revolves around keeping a single hypercarry alive and letting them deal all the damage. Every other champion's job is to peel and enhance the carry.
Key characteristics:
- A hypercarry ADC or mid laner with insane late-game damage
- Multiple champions with shields, heals, and peel abilities
- Strong late-game scaling
- Ability to survive until the carry reaches their power spikes
Example comp: Shen top, Ivern jungle, Lulu mid, Kog'Maw ADC, Janna support. Shen ult, Ivern shields, Lulu everything, and Janna peel make Kog'Maw nearly invincible. The only job of four players is to keep Kog'Maw alive while he melts the enemy team.
Win condition: Survive to late game. In team fights, position the hypercarry safely and use all protective abilities to keep them alive. The carry does enough damage to win the fight as long as they are not killed.
Building a Balanced Team
Even if you are not coordinating with your team in solo queue, you can make smarter picks by checking these boxes during champion select:
Damage Balance
Your team should ideally have a mix of physical (AD) and magic (AP) damage. If your team is entirely AD, the enemy can stack armor and become nearly unkillable. Check your team's damage types and adjust your pick accordingly. If your top and jungle are both AD, consider an AP mid laner.
Frontline Presence
Every team needs at least one champion who can absorb damage and initiate fights. Without a frontline, your squishies will get dove and killed before they can deal damage. If your team has no tank, consider picking one yourself or at least choosing a bruiser with some durability.
Crowd Control
CC wins team fights. If your team has limited hard CC, assassins and divers will freely jump onto your carries. Count the number of reliable CC abilities on your team and ensure there is enough to peel or initiate as needed.
Waveclear
Without waveclear, your team cannot push lanes, stall games when behind, or siege towers. At least one or two champions on your team should be able to clear waves quickly. This is particularly important for mid laners and ADCs.
Engage and Disengage
Your team needs a way to start fights and a way to retreat from bad fights. Without engage, you rely on the enemy making positioning mistakes. Without disengage, you are forced into every fight even when unfavorable. The best teams have both.
Adapting in Solo Queue
In solo queue, you cannot always get the perfect composition. Here are practical tips for drafting better in ranked:
- Fill the gaps. Look at what your team already has before locking in. If your team needs a tank, pick one. If your team is all AD, go AP.
- Do not force a composition. Solo queue lacks the coordination for complex strategies. Simple, frontline-heavy teamfight compositions are the most reliable.
- Communicate in chat. A simple "we need AP" or "we need a tank" in champion select can make a big difference.
- Have a flexible champion pool. Keep at least one tank, one damage dealer, and one utility champion in your pool for each role you play.
- Default to teamfighting. When in doubt, pick champions that are good in 5v5 fights. This is the easiest win condition to execute in solo queue.
