Rengar Guide

Jungle

Rengar is a tempo assassin jungler who leaps out of brush to delete a target. Unseen Predator lets him leap from brush or camouflage and builds Ferocity; at four stacks his next ability is empowered. Savagery empowers his next attacks, Battle Roar damages and heals him (empowered, it cleanses crowd control), Bola Strike slows (empowered, it roots), and Thrill of the Hunt camouflages him and reveals the nearest enemy champion so he can hunt them down. He wins through prepared setups: arrive with Ferocity ready, pick the right target and turn the kill into an objective.

Start Gustwalker Hatchling and rush a Serrated Dirk with boots. The main jungle path is Umbral Glaive into Profane Hydra, then Lord Dominik's Regards when armor is the problem or Edge of Night when enemies have point-and-click crowd control that stops your jump, such as Poppy, Gragas or Janna. When ahead against squishy teams, take Voltaic Cyclosword after Umbral Glaive; in low elo, Hubris or Axiom Arc help you snowball and chain picks. Youmuu's Ghostblade gives speed for flanks, Serpent's Fang counters shields, Serylda's Grudge and Bastionbreaker suit the newer lethality build, Black Cleaver helps against heavy armor, and Death's Dance or Guardian Angel help you survive the first answer. Mercury's Treads or Plated Steelcaps are situational boots. Run Fleet Footwork with Triumph, Legend: Alacrity and Cut Down, plus Sudden Impact and Relentless Hunter; take Coup de Grace into five squishies, Conqueror into bruisers or long fights, First Strike when you can reliably hit first, or Electrocute for a pure one-shot page. Take Flash with Smite; top lane Rengar takes Teleport or Ignite and builds Ravenous Hydra with Essence Reaver. Max Q, then E, then W.

Strengths

  • Huge one-shot burst on squishy targets from brush or camouflage.
  • Thrill of the Hunt reveals and reaches isolated enemies for reliable picks.
  • Empowered abilities give him a choice of damage, a root or a cleanse.

Weaknesses

  • Champions who stop his leap, like Poppy, or out-sustain him, like Briar and Warwick, are very hard.
  • Punished hard for jumping first into a ready team or into a bad empowered-ability choice.
  • Obvious paths through warded river lines kill his ganks before they start.

Laning Phase

Read the map before you route. A red start goes Red, Krugs, Raptors, then Wolves, Blue and Gromp, carrying Ferocity into the river; be ready for the Scuttle Crab, a gank or a trade at 2:55. Start blue side instead when top lane is volatile and you want an early top-side read. Prepare Ferocity on camps or wards so you arrive at three or four stacks, and enter ganks from lane brush, tri-brush or raptor angles instead of the warded river. Umbral Glaive and Oracle Lens turn a warded edge into a kill window. If your jump does not create map value within about 20 seconds, it was the wrong jump.

Mid & Late Game

Level 6 and your second item decide most games. Use Thrill of the Hunt to find isolated targets, choose the empowered ability that solves the fight: Savagery for the kill, Bola Strike for access against dashes or Flash, Battle Roar to cleanse and survive. Against crowd-control-heavy teams, leap in with a mid-air Bola Strike, start with Savagery and wait for their answer before using the empowered Battle Roar. Never jump first into a full five-versus-five; pick off a target and turn it into dragon, Voidgrubs or a tower.

Key Tips

  • Cast Bola Strike mid-air during your leap so the first contact is instant.
  • You can still leap for a brief moment after leaving a brush.
  • Pre-load empowered Savagery before the leap for a fast triple-Savagery burst.
  • E-Flash redirects the bola angle when no normal line exists.
