Manage Gnar’s Rage carefully: poke and trade as Mini Gnar with Boomerang Throw and Hyper, then time your transformation so Mega Gnar arrives exactly when you want to all-in or teamfight with Wallop and GNAR!

Lethal Tempo with Absorb Life, Legend: Alacrity and Last Stand, plus Bone Plating and Overgrowth, is the standard page; Fleet Footwork, Conqueror and Grasp are alternatives, with Grasp helping a fragile early Mini Gnar. Choose the Doran's start that suits the matchup. Rush Trinity Force, then Sterak's Gage or Black Cleaver, adding Randuin's Omen, Dead Man's Plate or Thornmail against AD and Wit's End or Force of Nature against AP, with Plated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads for boots.

Strengths

  • Fits almost any team composition, with damage, poke, sustain, crowd control and mobility.
  • A safe ranged top laner who shreds tanks with Hyper's max-health damage.
  • GNAR! can win a teamfight on its own, especially when it slams enemies into walls.

Weaknesses

  • Hard to play well, and Rage can force transformations at awkward moments.
  • Struggles against gap closers like Irelia and Yasuo.
  • No waveclear as Mini Gnar, and he relies on setup in solo queue.

Laning Phase

As Mini Gnar, poke as much as possible with auto → Boomerang Throw → auto to proc Hyper's third hit and its movement speed, and use Boomerang Throw's range to farm safely in hard lanes. Control your Rage: deal damage as Mini Gnar, then transform to finish the job. A Crunch into the enemy minion wave sets up a very strong level 3 all-in with Wallop and Boulder Toss.

Mid & Late Game

In teamfights you want to be Mega Gnar, so time your Rage to transform as the fight begins, then go Crunch → GNAR! → auto → Wallop → auto → Boulder Toss, weaving autos between abilities. Ulting enemies into walls — including player-made terrain such as Anivia's wall — stuns them and deals bonus damage.

Key Tips

  • Throw Boomerang backwards and don't catch it to extend its range for snipes, camp steals or recall cancels.
  • Hop can bounce off allied abilities coded as minions, such as Syndra's spheres or Jayce's gate.
  • Hop and Boomerang on the same target at once grants two Hyper stacks instantly.
  • Cast an ability just as Mega Gnar is about to shrink to hide the transformation animation.
