Mid

Aurelion Sol is a scaling battle mage. Cosmic Creator gains permanent stacks from Breath of Light and from Singularity's minion executes, so a weak early game turns into one of the strongest late games in the game. Astral Flight carries him over terrain and resets on takedowns, and a fully stacked Falling Star becomes The Skies Descend, which can flip a teamfight on its own.

Situational Items

Start Doran's Ring and a Health Potion; Dark Seal is a cheap, low-risk buy on early backs. Rylai's Crystal Scepter is the best rush in most lanes for its health and its slow, which doubles as self-peel; in safe lanes Blackfire Torch gives better wave clear. Continue with Liandry's Torment, Sorcerer's Shoes and Bloodletter's Curse, then Zhonya's Hourglass and Rabadon's Deathcap. Rod of Ages and Archangel's Staff suit a tankier scaling build, Void Staff or Cryptbloom handle magic resistance, and Banshee's Veil helps against burst. Run Deathfire Touch with Manaflow Band, Absolute Focus and Scorch, plus Presence of Mind and Cut Down; Arcane Comet is the stronger mid lane option at higher ranks, and a Resolve secondary with Bone Plating helps against assassins such as Fizz, LeBlanc and Zoe. Take Flash and Teleport (Barrier if you play him bot). Max Q first, then W, then E.

Strengths

Endless stacking keeps him useful late, even after a rough early game.
Astral Flight resets on takedowns, which makes roams and clean-ups very strong.
Singularity and Falling Star control huge areas in skirmishes and teamfights from range.

Weaknesses

A very weak early game: he usually loses lane and needs patience.
Breath of Light keeps him standing still, which exposes him to skillshots and crowd control.
Assassins and gap closers are a big problem once they reach him, since Falling Star is his only self-peel.

Laning Phase

Your lane priorities are: stay alive, then experience, then gold, then stacks. Tap Breath of Light briefly to trigger Manaflow Band, Scorch and Rylai's slow, and cancel it whenever you need to dodge a key skillshot such as Ahri's Charm or Lux's root. Before minions arrive, ward the enemy raptors around 1:20 and check the jungler's farm to work out which side they started on. Before level 9 your wave clear is weak, so hit the melee minions with a few attacks first so they die to Singularity's execute. After a bad trade, recall and fly back over your base with Astral Flight.

Mid & Late Game

You spike hard after two completed items, usually around 18 to 20 minutes, so play safe until then. Push side lanes, build stacks and have the empowered ultimate ready for Atakhan and dragon fights. Look for catches with Astral Flight, Rylai's slow and Falling Star, and in teamfights stay at range: fly through walls to keep enemies in Breath of Light range while staying out of melee range, and chain Astral Flight resets after each takedown.

Key Tips

Keep holding Q and press W to breathe fire while you fly.
A takedown within 3 seconds of damaging a champion resets Astral Flight.
On cannon waves, stand slightly off-centre and aim Q at the cannon minion to take the whole wave's stacks with E.
Fly over the Nexus after recalling to get back to lane faster.
